Adult diapause morph of the brown stink bug, Euschistus servus (Say) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
Borges,Miguel; Zhang,Aijun; Camp,Mary J.; Aldrich,Jeffrey R..
The brown stink bug, Euschistus servus (Say), is abundant throughout most of eastern North America and is commonly found feeding on soybean, mullein, beans, tomatoes, peas, cotton, wheat, corn, tobacco and peach. Color change in E. servus from green to reddish-brown was shown to be an indicator of reproductive diapause. Reddish-brown insects lived longer than green individuals, females laid no eggs, and males did not produce pheromone. The high mortality registered for the green colony of E. servus adults was associated with the physiological cost associated with reproduction. The main pheromone component of this species is methyl 2E,4Z-decadienoate, in agreement with previous work. The first generation of this species develops on noncrop hosts and the...

Silva,Cleonor Cavalcante Alves; Laumann,Raul Alberto; Moraes,Maria Carolina Blassioli; Aquino,Michely Ferreira Santos de; Borges,Miguel.
The objective of this work was to compare the biology of Chinavia impicticornis and C. ubica (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), two species of stinkbugs that occur as secondary pests in soybean. Life table procedures were used for evaluating nymphs, and fecundity tables for evaluating adults, in order to establish the demographics of the two species. The two species have similar demographic parameters, and the development of immature stages, from egg to adult, had similar duration periods of approximately 30 days. In both species, eggs and second-instar nymphs were the stages with higher mortality. Total egg production did not differ between females of both species. Fecundity and survival curves for adults showed similar trends in both species. However, C. ubica...

Defesas induzidas por herbivoria e interações específicas no sistema tritrófico soja-percevejos-parasitoides de ovos PAB
Lopes,Ana Paula Silva; Diniz,Ivone Rezende; Moraes,Maria Carolina Blassioli; Borges,Miguel; Laumann,Raúl Alberto.

Effect of stereoisomers of the main component of the sex pheromone of Euschistus heros (F.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in the attractiveness of females Anais da SEB
Costa,Maria L.M.; Borges,Miguel; Vilela,Evaldo F.; Marco Jr,Paulo de; Lima,Eraldo R..
The attractiveness of Euschistus heros (F.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) females to the eight stereoisomers of the methyl 2,6,10-trimethyltridecanoate, major component of the sex pheromone produced by the males of this species, was studied in a double choice olfactometer. Bioassays showed that the (2R, 6R, 10S) stereoisomer was necessary for the attractiveness of females, presenting better results in relation to the others. The stereoisomeric mixture was shown to present significative attractiveness to females, however, when compared to the (2R, 6R, 10S) stereoisomer, it showed lower attractiveness.

Euschistus heros mass rearing technique for the multiplication of Telenomus podisi PAB
Silva,Cleonor Cavalcante; Laumann,Raul Alberto; Blassioli,Maria Carolina; Pareja,Martin; Borges,Miguel.
The objective of this work was to improve the mass rearing technique of Euschistus heros in laboratory. Nymphs and adults were reared at densities 100, 200, 300 and 400 eggs per Petri dish (9 cm diameter), and at 50, 100, 150 and 200 couples per rearing cages (900 mL), respectively. Survival rate of immature stages and survivorship and reproduction of adults were determinated. Survivorship of nymph to adult was the highest (89%) at density 100 eggs per dish. Adult survivorship was independent of density, and 100 couples per cage were the best to improve quality of the produced progeny. In these conditions, fecundity was 160.8±9.28 eggs per female, and a total of 8,950±456 eggs per cage per month was produced. Two hundred couples per cage showed a negative...

Medeiros,Maria A.; Schimidt,Francisco V.G.; Loiácono,Marta S.; Carvalho,Vinícius F.; Borges,Miguel.
The mortality of Euschistus heros (F.) at the egg stage was studied at the field. The experiments were carried out in Planaltina - D.F., Brazil, in 1993 and 1994, on sunflower (Helianthus annuus) cultivated following the soybean (Glycine max) crop season. Egg masses found in the field were marked and checked daily for four days, and taken to the laboratory to check the total number of eggs, eggs that failed to hatch and those parasitized or destroyed by predators. The incidence of parasitism in eggs of E. heros was high in 1993 (65%) and in 1994 (80%). Five species of parasitoids were recovered: Telenomus podisi Ashmead, Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston), Trissolcus teretis Johnson, Trissolcus urichi Crawford (Scelionidae) and Eupelmus sp. (Eupelmidae). T....

RAPD analysis revealing polymorphism in egg parasitoids of soybean stink bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Anais da SEB
Aljanabi,Salah M.; Loiácono,Marta S.; Lourenço,Rodrigo T.; Borges,Miguel; Tigano,Myrian S..
The solitary egg parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) of Pentatomidae species complex are potential candidates for soybean (Glycine max L.) integrated pest management programs in Brazil. The correct identification of species and strains of these parasitoids is necessary to implement the use of biological control. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to generate random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) from male individuals of Telenomus podisi Ashmead and Trissolcus spp. collected in a soybean field in Brasília, Brazil in 1996. The analysis of 18 primers used to screen Trissolcus spp. individuals revealed different patterns related to the species analyzed. These results indicate the potential of RAPD markers to differentiate T. teretis Johnson,...

Semiochemicals from plants and insects on the foraging behavior of Platygastridae egg parasitoids PAB
Blassioli-Moraes,Maria Carolina; Borges,Miguel; Michereff,Mirian Fernandes Furtado; Magalhães,Diego Martins; Laumann,Raúl Alberto.
Abstract: The objective of this review was to summarize the current information about semiochemicals with potential to be applied in insect pest management in agroecosystems. One of the great challenges to Neotropical agriculture is to reduce the indiscriminate use of pesticides, which can be minimized by using semiochemicals, a tool that can be applied in the field to manage pests and their natural enemies. In addition, small lipophilic molecules from insects and from the secondary metabolism of plants play a fundamental role in the chemical communication of different species that are present in important crops.

Sensory response of the egg parasitoid Telenomus podisi to stimuli from the bug Euschistus heros PAB
Silva,Cleonor Cavalcante; Moraes,Maria Carolina Blassioli; Laumann,Raúl Alberto; Borges,Miguel.
The objective of this work was to study the foraging behavior of Telenomus podisi Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) in the presence of stimuli from its host, Euschistus heros (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae). The stimuli selected were: egg mass; virgin males and females; volatile extracts of sexually mature males and females; components of male sex pheromone; a component of the alarm pheromone, hexane and an empty cage as control. In a closed arena, the parasitoids were given the choice between single and combined stimuli presented to them simultaneously. To find the host egg, T. podisi primarily uses the sensory cues released from the male insects. The orientation toward odors of male chemical extract indicates that a source of kairomone was detected. Gas...

Stimulatory male volatiles for the Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
Zhang,Aijun; Borges,Miguel; Aldrich,Jeffrey R.; Camp,Mary.
Volatiles compounds collected from the male Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.), a serious Central and South American soybean pest, have been reevaluated. The proportion of three methyl esters is found to be quite different from previous study. A new blend is proposed as the male-produced stimulatory volatiles based on gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) techniques. The three GC-EAD-active components reproducibly found in volatiles collected from males are methyl (2E,4Z)-decadienoate (53%), methyl 2,6,10-trimethyldodecanoate (3%), and methyl 2,6,10-trimethyltridecanoate (44%) respectively. Males of this hemipteran species needed to reach an age of ~15 days to produce enough male-specific compounds to be detected by...

Trichogramma pretiosum attraction due to the Elasmopalpus lignosellus damage in maize PAB
Xavier,Luciane Modenez Saldivar; Laumann,Raúl Alberto; Borges,Miguel; Magalhães,Diego Martins; Vilela,Evaldo Ferreira; Blassioli-Moraes,Maria Carolina.
The objective of this work was to evaluate if corn plants damaged by the lesser cornstalk borer (Elasmopalpus lignosellus) larvae release volatile organic compounds capable of attracting the egg parasitoid Trichogramma pretiosum. The treatments consisted of plants subjected to harm caused by E. lignosellus larvae, plants subjected to mechanical damage, and undamaged plants. The parasitoid was more attracted by the volatiles released by the insect damaged plants than to those released by undamaged corn plants, after 24 and 72 hours. The volatiles (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, β-pinene, β-myrcene, (E)-4,8-dimethylnona-1,3,7-triene, and benzothiazole were released in significantly larger quantities by damaged plants.
